What hotels actually cost
Booking sites tell you what a room costs today. None of them tells you whether that is normal. These are the prices we are quoted across 1,489 hotels, checked on a schedule, so you can tell an ordinary rate from a bad one.

How we worked this out
- What the figure is. The cheapest room available at each hotel, per night, for two adults sharing one room — then the middle value across 1,489 hotels. Half cost more, half cost less.
- Grouped by star rating because mixing them measures the wrong thing. Lumped together, our London figure came out at $477 a night — true of our list, and misleading about London, because far more of the hotels we can sell there are four-star than budget.
- From our own price checks, not from what visitors searched for. We check prices on a schedule that does not care which hotels are popular. Counting searches instead would describe our own visitors and call it the market.
- Each hotel counts once, however many times we checked it — otherwise whichever properties our queue happened to revisit would drag the number around.
- Based on 3,124 price checks from 2026-08-09 to 2026-08-12, a rolling 30 days.
- What it is not. This covers the hotels we can book, not every hotel in the city. Our list leans towards properties our suppliers hold contracts with, so treat it as a guide to what you will be quoted here — not as the city average. Prices are in US dollars and exclude local tourist taxes and any fees charged at the property.
