Hotels in Athens

Cheap for what you get, with a compact historic core and a hotel market shaped by people passing through to the islands.

A large share of Athens' visitors are on their way somewhere else, and the hotel market has organised itself around that. There is a deep supply of one and two-night city stays near the ancient sites and the port links, and rates are low for a European capital, particularly outside the summer.

The historic core is small and walkable — the ancient sites, the old quarter and the main squares sit within twenty minutes of each other on foot, and the metro runs from the airport straight into the middle of it. That makes central hotels unusually easy to justify here, because central is not expensive.

Summer is hot enough to change how you plan a day, and rates in the city fall in August even as the islands peak. Spring and autumn are the best conditions and the highest prices.

Where to stay in Athens

The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.

The old quarter below the Acropolis

Narrow lanes and low buildings directly beneath the ancient site. The prettiest area, the shortest walks, and a lot of small hotels with roof terraces facing the rock. Busiest and priciest, by local standards.

Around the central squares

Larger hotels on the main avenues, better transport links and better value. Some streets are noticeably more run-down than others, so the specific address matters more here than the district.

The coast and the port

Along the water to the south and around the ferry port. Useful if you are catching an early boat to the islands, or if you want a beach stay attached to a city visit.

Stay near

Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Athens for stays around that spot.

Athens: common questions

Where should I stay in Athens if I am catching a ferry?

Either near the port itself for an early departure, or anywhere on the metro line that serves it — the connection is direct and quick, so a central hotel is usually the better choice unless your boat leaves at dawn.

Is Athens cheap for hotels?

Yes, by western European capital standards, and it stays cheap in the centre rather than only on the outskirts. August is cheaper still in the city itself, even though the Greek islands are at their peak.

Is two nights enough in Athens?

For the main ancient sites and the old quarter, yes — the historic core is compact and walkable, which is why so many visitors treat it as a stop on the way to the islands.
