Hotels in Los Angeles

Not one city but a sprawl of them, where the wrong neighbourhood costs you hours in traffic rather than money.

Los Angeles is the least centralised city on this list by a wide margin. The beach, the studios, the downtown towers and the museum districts are separated by distances that take an hour or more to cross at the wrong time of day. There is no single good area — there is only the area closest to what you are actually here for.

That makes the booking decision unusually consequential. A cheaper hotel in the wrong part of the county can cost far more in time and transport than it saves in room rate, and public transport, while improving, does not cover the city the way it does in Europe or Asia.

The weather is reliable enough that it barely moves prices; demand follows events, school holidays and the awards calendar instead. Parking is charged separately at most hotels and is worth checking before booking if you are driving.

Where to stay in Los Angeles

The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.

The beach cities

Along the coast — the most pleasant setting, the best walking, and the furthest from the studios and downtown. The obvious choice if the beach is the point of the trip.

Hollywood and the central west side

Closest to the studios, the famous streets and most of the nightlife, with a broad range of hotels. The most convenient base for a first visit that is about the city itself.

Downtown and around the airport

Business hotels in the towers, the best public transport links in the county, and the cheapest rooms of the three. The airport cluster is worth it only for an early flight.

Stay near

Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Los Angeles for stays around that spot.

Los Angeles: common questions

Where should I stay in Los Angeles without a car?

Downtown or along the rail lines, which are the only parts of the county where getting around without driving is genuinely straightforward. The beach cities are walkable within themselves but poorly connected to everywhere else.

How long does it take to get across Los Angeles?

Far longer than the distance suggests. An hour between the coast and downtown is normal at peak times, and the traffic peaks are long. Choose your area by what you will do most days, not by the room rate.

Do Los Angeles hotels charge for parking?

Most do, separately from the room rate, and it can add a meaningful amount per night. If you are hiring a car, check the parking charge before comparing two hotels on price alone.
