Hotels in Madrid
Better value than most European capitals of its size, with a compact centre and a summer that empties the city and the prices with it.
Madrid is consistently cheaper than the western European capitals it is usually compared to, for the same standard of room in an equally central location. It is also more compact than its size suggests: the museums, the old centre and the main squares sit within a walkable core, and the metro handles everything beyond it cheaply and quickly.
The hotel stock skews newer than Rome's or Lisbon's, with more full-size rooms and more lifts, and a strong supply of business hotels that discount heavily at weekends. That weekday-weekend inversion is worth exploiting — the same room can cost meaningfully less on a Saturday than on a Tuesday.
The summer is the thing to plan around. Madrid is inland and genuinely hot in July and August, and much of the city leaves; hotel rates fall accordingly. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant and the most expensive.
Where to stay in Madrid
The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.
The old centre
Around the main squares and the historic streets — walkable to almost everything, busiest at night, and full of smaller older properties. The obvious first-visit choice.
The museum axis and the park
Grander streets, larger hotels and the major galleries on the doorstep, with the city's main park at one end. Quieter at night and generally better rooms for the money than the old centre.
The business districts to the north
Modern towers along the main avenue, aimed at weekday business travellers and heavily discounted at weekends. Excellent metro links and the largest rooms in the city, at the cost of atmosphere.
Stay near
Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Madrid for stays around that spot.

Madrid: common questions
When are hotels in Madrid cheapest?
August, when the heat is at its worst and much of the city is away, and midwinter outside the holidays. Weekends are also cheaper than weekdays in the business districts, which is the reverse of most tourist cities.
Is Madrid cheaper than Barcelona?
Generally yes, for a comparable hotel in a comparable location. Barcelona's supply is capped and its summer demand is higher; Madrid has more rooms and a season that works against it, and both push prices down.
Do I need to stay in the very centre of Madrid?
Less than in most capitals. The metro is fast, cheap and extensive, so a room a few stops out is a genuine saving rather than a compromise. The centre is worth it mainly if you want to walk home late.
