Hong Kong has the tightest land constraints of anywhere here, and it shows in the rooms: a standard double is small by any international measure, and the price you pay buys location and view rather than space. Read the stated room size rather than assuming from the star rating, because the difference between categories is often measured in a few square metres.

The city is split by a harbour, with the business district and the older streets on the island side and a dense hotel and shopping quarter facing it from the peninsula. The crossing takes minutes by metro or by ferry, so both sides are practical — the peninsula is generally cheaper and has the famous view back across the water.

Transport is fast, cheap and reaches the airport in about half an hour, which removes most of the usual reasons to prefer one district. Prices rise around the largest trade fairs and fall in the hot, wet late summer.

Where to stay in Hong Kong

The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.

The peninsula facing the harbour

The densest concentration of hotels, from budget to grand, with the view back to the island skyline. Generally better value than the island and excellent for shopping and food.

The island's north shore

The business district and the older commercial streets — higher prices, more polished hotels, and the closest access to the bars and restaurants that fill after work.

The outer districts and near the airport

Larger rooms and lower rates away from the harbour, plus the airport hotels for an early flight. The metro makes the distance far less punishing than it looks on a map.

Stay near

Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Hong Kong for stays around that spot.

Hong Kong: common questions

Are hotel rooms in Hong Kong really that small?

Yes. Land scarcity makes them among the smallest anywhere, and the room size often matters more to how the stay feels than the star rating does. Check the stated square metres before booking rather than relying on the category.

Should I stay on the island or the peninsula?

The peninsula is usually cheaper, has more hotels and offers the classic view back across the harbour. The island side is closer to the business district and the nightlife. The crossing takes minutes either way, so it is a preference rather than a constraint.

How far is the airport from central Hong Kong?

About half an hour on the dedicated airport rail line, which runs directly into both the peninsula and the island's business district. It is one of the easiest airport transfers of any major city.
