Hotels in Porto
Smaller, steeper and cheaper than Lisbon, with the river doing most of the work in deciding where to stay.
Porto is a compact city arranged around a river gorge, and almost every decision about where to stay comes down to which side of the water you want to be on and how far up the slope you are willing to climb. The historic centre falls steeply to the riverside, and the difference between a room at the top and one at the bottom is a serious walk.
It is meaningfully cheaper than Lisbon for a similar standard of room, and the hotel stock has improved quickly — a wave of conversions has turned old merchant buildings into small design hotels, alongside the established guesthouses and a growing number of larger modern properties away from the centre.
The city is walkable end to end, so transport is rarely the deciding factor. Weather is the bigger variable: Porto is wetter and cooler than the south of the country, and rates reflect that, with a clear summer peak and a cheap, damp winter.
Where to stay in Porto
The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.
The historic centre
Steep lanes, tiled churches and the densest concentration of small hotels and guesthouses. Everything is walkable from here, but very little of that walk is flat. Older buildings mean smaller rooms and frequent stairs.
The riverside and the far bank
Along the water at the bottom of the gorge, and across the bridge where the port cellars are. The best views and the most atmosphere, at the cost of a climb whenever you want to leave.
The modern city and the coast
Larger, newer hotels away from the historic core, with proper-sized rooms and better prices, plus the beach suburbs at the mouth of the river. A tram or metro ride from the centre.
Stay near
Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Porto for stays around that spot.

Porto: common questions
Is Porto cheaper than Lisbon?
Yes, generally noticeably so for a comparable hotel in a comparable position. Porto is smaller, has less international demand and a shorter high season, and all three keep rates lower.
Should I stay on the riverside in Porto?
It is the most atmospheric part of the city and the best for views, but it sits at the bottom of a steep gorge — every trip out involves climbing back. If you would rather not do that daily, stay in the upper centre and walk down.
When are hotels in Porto cheapest?
Late autumn through winter, which is also the wettest part of the year. The summer is the peak, and the difference between the two is large for a city of this size.
