Hotels in Milan
A business city first and a tourist one second, which makes its hotel prices behave differently from the rest of Italy.
Milan's hotel market runs on business and trade rather than sightseeing, and that inverts the usual rules. Weekdays are expensive and weekends are cheap; the fashion weeks and the largest fairs can triple the going rate across the entire city; and August, when the city empties, is one of the cheapest months of the year.
The stock reflects that too. There are more full-size, modern, well-equipped rooms here than in Rome or Florence, more reliable lifts and air conditioning, and less charm. If you want a converted palazzo you can find one, but the default is a competent business hotel.
The centre is compact and the metro is straightforward, so getting around is easy. Most of what visitors come for sits within a small radius of the cathedral, and the exhibition grounds that drive the pricing are well outside it.
Where to stay in Milan
The area you book in changes the price and the trip more than the star rating does.
Around the cathedral
The historic centre, the shopping streets and the opera house, all walkable. The most expensive area and the most convenient for a short visit.
Around the central station
The largest concentration of big modern hotels, with the best transport links to the airports and the rest of Italy. Consistently the best value, in a workaday part of town.
The canals and the south
Where the restaurants and bars are, and the liveliest part of the city in the evening. Smaller properties, more character, and a short tram or metro ride from the centre.
Stay near
Most people pick a hotel by what they want to be next to. Each of these searches Milan for stays around that spot.

Milan: common questions
Why are Milan hotels so expensive some weeks and cheap others?
Because the market is driven by trade fairs and fashion weeks rather than tourism. During a major event the whole city fills at once and rates rise steeply; on an ordinary weekend, or in August when the city empties, the same room can cost a fraction of that.
When is the cheapest time to book a hotel in Milan?
August, and weekends outside the fair calendar. Because business travel drives demand, Saturday nights are often the cheapest of the week — the reverse of most tourist cities.
Is Milan a good base for visiting the rest of northern Italy?
Yes. It has the best rail connections in the country, so the lakes and the other northern cities are comfortable day trips, and hotel prices here are usually lower than in the smaller tourist towns.
